SUMMARY:Techniques and Tools to check your bias in Search-And-Screen Processes
DESCRIPTION:Conference Session \n \n\nDescription\n \nIn this presentation\, we will show how members of search-and-screen committees can make more equitable\, consistent and fact-driven decisions by using tools and techniques from the qualitative research tradition. We will show how fundamental qualitative research techniques can help you check your bias as you review several (or many!) applications. In addition\, we will show how qualitative data analysis software (such as NVivo\, MAXQDA\, or Atlas.Ti) can be used in search-and-screen processes. We will illustrate how the software can be used to annotate applicant materials based on required/preferred screening categories\, and how it can help screening committees ground their discussions and decisions in the applicant materials. \n\nPresenter Information \n\nChristian Schmieder\nJesse Henderson\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Maximizing Digital Marketing Resources on Campus for Degree Promotion
DESCRIPTION:Conference Session \n \n\nDescription\n \nIt’s taken years of persistent effort and learning to make the MS in Biotechnology Program’s website the central destination and resource for recruiting prospective students in a highly competitive digital market. Come hear our story and lessons learned. There currently are no turn-key solutions to provide end-to-end support for digital marketing and integration; the task is too complex and solutions must be customized to fit individual objectives. My hope is participants leave with an understanding of the complexity of comprehensive digital marketing and increased knowledge of existing campus resources and partners that can help campus academic organizations. \nBetween 2018-2023\, the MS in Biotechnology Program transitioned from a longtime locally hosted website\, to a completely redesigned site hosted using the free WiscWeb\, to a standalone DoIT web hosting (Nickel) platform. I’ll outline key considerations and explore pros and cons for various decisions\, including in-house solutions vs campus-provided resources\, necessary steps and recommended tools for maximizing SEO\, ways to improve website load time (including receiving great support from the DoIT Web Hosting team)\, web hosting security\, risk-mitigation\, and back-up methods\, and adding external digital marketing vendors to a comprehensive marketing plan. I will also suggest areas for future integration. \n\nPresenter Information \n\nBryan Husk\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Gap to the Future: Conducting a Gap Analysis to Identify Team Specific DEIB Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Conference Session \n \n\nDescription\n \nMeet the challenge of team diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging (DEIB) using a traditional gap analysis. A gap analysis is a method for generating ideas and moving forward on initiatives and projects to create desired change. Together\, we will explore the benefits of a gap analysis\, how to complete one\, and how to look for insights. Our cohort used this tool to better understand the differences between our current and future states around DEIB and identify strategies for influencing DEIB. \nJoin us to learn:\n• How to apply a gap analysis to your own team’s aspirations\n• Current observations and strategies for influencing diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging in teams\n• How to develop an awareness of a current situation\, so that you can brainstorm the changes you would like to see in the future \n\nPresenter Information \n\nAmy Diestler\nBrian Lin\nChris Poser\nJay Ray\nKimberly Arnold\nVanessa Taulbee\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Stuck in Limbo: Struggles and Successes with MS Graph API for Automated Email Access into O365 - Live Session
DESCRIPTION:Conference Session \nJoin the Zoom Event \n\nDescription\n \nThe University of Wisconsin-Madison is a large place\, with many staff members. One of the struggles that is familiar to many is how to balance specialized needs for divisions\, colleges and other groups inside the university\, with the administrative goals of simplifying services at a central level. In particular\, email transmissions that are handled by software without the intervention of human hands can struggle when modernization occurs: the need for multi-factor authentication and deprecation of POP/IMAP protocols conflicts with services run by groups such as the college of Engineering. \nMy presentation goes over the journey I made as the sysadmin for a ticketing program that needed to be able to fetch and send emails through O365 as a computer — not a human that could perform multi-factor auth. I will discuss the basic layout of the way that I solved the issue\, point out some pitfalls that arise because of the University’s bureaucracy and hierarchical structure\, and offer some tips for others trying to write middleware in the trenches. \nMy audience will understand this better if they know the underlying mechanisms of emails and how they’re sent or accessed\, as well as Office 365 authentication mechanisms. \nThe key takeaways are that writing middleware or API layers at the University can be quite difficult and challenging\, but given the right circumstances\, also successful. Another thing to learn is that challenges are almost never purely technical in nature\, a lot of obstacles that come up are going to include tasks that take people-knowledge and social skill in the workplace. An appreciation for the wide variety of business needs among campus IT will be emphasized strongly. \n\nPresenter Information \n\nBrian Wilt\n\n\nImage Licensed under Creative Commons Zero.

SUMMARY:Using Contract-First Development for the Person API to Solve Real Use-Cases - Live Session
DESCRIPTION:Conference Session \nJoin the Zoom Event \n\nDescription\n \nIn this presentation\, I will share how our team created a Person API to improve data integrations with core identity data. Using a technique called contract-first API development\, our team was able to show what the API would look like from a user perspective first\, which then influenced the technical implementation “under the hood”. I’ll also cover why we chose to create an API\, and the benefits behind using APIs for data integrations. \nAttendees should have a basic awareness or understanding of APIs would be preferred\, but isn’t required. I plan to briefly define an API as a basis for the presentation. \nAttendees will learn\n– Knowledge of what an API is\, and why someone would consume or create one.\n– Understanding of APIs compared to how most integrations are implemented at UW-Madison\, and why one might prefer an API approach.\n– Basic knowledge of API design\, and applying UX design techniques when creating a specification for an API to make sure it addresses user needs.\n– Understanding of what the Person API is\, and a basic understanding of how to get access and use it. \n\nPresenter Information \n\nJared Kosanovic\n\n\nImage by dawnydawny from Pixabay.
